The Deterioration Series by Robert Farber
Since its release, the Deterioration Series by American photographer Robert Farber, has garnered significant attention. This exceptional collection's acclaim includes a sold-out $18,000 limited edition book and a prominent exhibition at the National Art Gallery in Washington. Additionally, one image from the series was chosen by Karl Lagerfeld to serve as the lead art for his book Paris Photo.
The Discovery of the Deterioration Series
In the 1990s, Robert Farber made a remarkable discovery within his archives. Photographs he had taken between 1977 and 1984, stored in non-archival plastic sleeves for decades, had undergone a natural transformation, deteriorating over time. Fascinated by this unintended collaboration with time, Farber decided to let the process continue. He monitored his archives during thirty years, until 2013, when he finally chose to preserve the images without any retouching or digital manipulation. The emergence of unique shapes and color shifts created striking abstract imagery, giving birth to the Deterioration Series.
Farber’s Impact on the Art World
Celebrated for his evocative and creative approach to photography, Farber has become a renowned figure in the art world. Since the beginning of his career in 1969, he has consistently pushed the boundaries of visual storytelling, capturing the essence of his subjects, often women, with a unique blend of sensitivity and style. His influence spans generations, and his work is recognized globally, through the forms of books, fine art exhibitions, and award-winning advertising campaigns.
Farber has also received prestigious awards such as the Photographer of the Year from the PMA (Photographic Manufacturers Association), the ASP International Award from the PPA (Professional Photographers of America), and honors from The American Society of Photographers.
