HOW TO DESIGN AN INTERIOR AROUND A KEY IMAGE

Designing a living space inspired by one central photograph is a great way to create a unique and personal home. A central art piece can be used as a focal point to guide the overall style, color palette, and mood of the living space. Fashion photography is particularly well suited to creating a tone for a room, as the modern edge of fashion photography makes a statement that can transform an entire room.

First, choose an art piece that you love and reflects your personality. Once you have your piece, take note of the colors used in the art piece and use them as a starting point for your overall color palette. Use the art piece to guide the overall style of the living space.  For example, if the piece has a more romantic feel, you might choose furniture and decor with softer lines and textures. Next, When selecting furniture and decor for your living space, think about layering textures to create depth. This could include soft fabrics like throw pillows and rugs, as well as harder materials like wood and metal.

An inspiration for this approach to interior design is Sophie Ashby. Ashby is an interior designer who slowly collects artworks that inspire her, and through her works she generates color pallets. For instance, her living space which was largely inspired by the photograph above the fireplace. When decorating this living space, Ashby explains, “in the sitting room, I wanted to start with this artwork I put it above the fireplace and then I extracted the yellow from his hat for the banana yellow sofa.” Ashby is a great example of how inspiration for an entire space can come from one grand scale work of art. Using the shade of yellow for the living room sofa allows for a cohesive and creative look throughout the space.

This piece by photographer Chiron Duong would make a statement in an interior even if it was the only piece in the room. Using this piece, one could create a color pallete which would guide the styling choices for the rest of the living space.

Finally, don't be afraid to experiment and make adjustments. Designing a living space inspired by one piece of art is a creative process. Your living space should be a comfortable environment that suits your lifestyle.

Designing a living space inspired by one piece of art is a fun way to add individuality to your home. By using the art piece to guide the color scheme, style, and mood of the living space, and by layering textures and lighting, you can create a beautiful and functional space that is both aesthetically pleasing and comfortable to live in.
