This image was taken during one of Patrick James Michel’s numerous trips to the American West. It is featured in his book Five, which displays his theme of earth, water, fire, air.

The artist, who has traveled the world and met many communities and tribes including Native Americans and Shamans, leverages his mastery of photography techniques to capture the intangible.

The Hopi, peaceful by nature, have carried on their ancient way of life and culture for more than 2000 years. The Hopi extended family -- relatives by blood and clan -- provide a remarkable support system in Hopi society. Talawyma, who is of the Sun clan by his mother and the Eagles clan by his father exemplifies the sense of heritage and interconnections among the clans. This makes him a member of the Tobacco clan.
