“Oluchi” (God’s work) 01, Lagos Nigeria, 2020
PHOTOGRAPHER: ADEBAYO JOLAOSO
Entitled after Adebayo’s muse and model for this series, this radiant portrait of Oluchi has a deeply coincidental and somewhat spiritual story behind it. Oluchi is from the Igbo ethnic group and her name translates to ‘God’s Work.’ Adebayo describes meeting her by accident in a restaurant and finding himself in complete awe of her face, likening her beauty and glowing skin to the characters from classical European oil paintings. For the photographer there was an instant connection between them it was as if their paths were meant to cross. Therefore, Adebayo entitled the series God’s Work after Oluchi because it encapsulated the serendipitous nature of their meeting and reinforced the photographer’s belief of a higher power at play in the universe and that all humans are connected to each-other at one point in time. In this portrait, Oluchi’s elegant features are highlighted perfectly by the drops of sunlight dotted across her face, her gaze meets the viewers eyes, holding us in a moment of connection.
