WOMEN AS ART

November 10 - November 29, 2020

Women As Art is a retrospective in celebration of Robert Farber’s extensive five-decade career. This exhibition follows the photographer’s continuous exploration of the female form over the years, from classic nudes, editorial photography and beauty photography, to more experimental work like the Deterioration Series and Wet Series. The Selects Gallery is excited to be the first partnering gallery to showcase Farber’s new, never-before-seen work in an internationally-traveling exhibition. All images are currently available for purchase in limited edition.

For the serious collector, we are selecting certain new releases to be available as a one-of-a-kind, unique prints. These images are marked as Unique Option on their product page and will never be produced again in any size or format. The print will be signed 1/1 and the certificate of authentication will indicate the same information as a unique artwork.

FARBER NUDES

Robert Farber’s nudes are instantly recognizable by their cinematic softness and distinct sensuality. His compositions capture the female figure in various contexts— often abstracting bodies with clever cropping, overlaid shadows, and gorgeous natural backdrops. Farber’s nudes are an unabashed celebration of the human body.

FASHION AND BEAUTY WORK

Robert Farber gained recognition as a photographer in the New York fashion industry during the early 1970s. Best known for his depictions of the female form, his work blurs the lines between editorial and fine art photography, as he commonly evokes a stylized painterly quality within his photos. Having a background in marketing and business, Farber’s work is commercially accessibly while still retaining its own distinct artistry. His elevated style of creating commercial fashion imagery has led him to work with major clients like Dior, Saks and Bloomingdales, and his photographs have appeared in publications from Vanity Fair and Vogue to GQ, Esquire and even Playboy.

The Deterioration Series

The Deterioration Series h features photographs taken between 1977 and 1984. The deterioration is the result of the film's chemical reaction from decades of sitting in non-archival plastic sleeves, resulting in striking new imagery. Robert noticed the changes in his archives during the 1990s, and decided to stop the transformation and preserve the images in their current state in 2013. No retouching or digital manipulation has been used.

The Wet Series

On April 24th, 2018 Robert Farber’s studio was flooded in the middle of the night. While excavating the ruins, he uncovered several catalogues of drenched, non-archival small prints. After separating dozens of images Robert discarded the unaffected photos and kept the new abstractions of the originals, thus creating the Wet Series.
