Patrick James Michel is a highly accomplished French photographer who has made a name for himself by capturing the unique beauty of various cultures and communities around the world. His portfolio encompasses fashion, cowboys, surfers, tribes, and many more subjects and genres. Patrick James Michel's working style is unique. He manages to capture the essence of his subjects, whether they are indigenous tribes, cowboys or surfers. His ability to capture the moment and convey emotion through his photographs is simply remarkable. With his distinctive style, Patrick James Michel has collaborated with some of the biggest names in the industry, including Vogue, GQ, Milk, Elle, Marie-Claire, Rolling Stone, Condé Nast Traveller, and British Journal of Photography.

One of Michel’s standout work is his exploration of the world’s tribes. Patrick James Michel's exploration of the world's tribes was a personal passion and a long-standing interest. He was fascinated by the diversity of cultures and traditions of indigenous peoples, and he saw photography as a way to document and preserve their way of life. He travelled extensively and photographed many tribes. Michel believed that by capturing their images, he could help promote a greater understanding and appreciation of these cultures, which were often marginalized and at risk of disappearing. During his travels, Michel worked closely with the tribes he photographed, often spending varying lengths of time living with them and learning about their customs and traditions. He worked with them to create portraits and images that reflected their unique identity and way of life, rather than imposing his own preconceptions or stereotypes. Michel's work also had a social dimension, as he sought to use his photographs to raise awareness of the challenges faced by indigenous peoples, such as cultural preservation and economic development. His photographs have been published in books and exhibited in galleries around the world, and he has become a respected voice in documentary photography. His personal work has led him to produce numerous exhibitions, notably on the Five Elements at Paris Photo, Galerie 213 in Paris, and the Naarden Festival (Netherlands). Overall, Michel's project to photograph the world's tribes was motivated by a deep sense of curiosity and respect for other cultures, as well as a desire to use his art to make a positive difference in the world.

This photograph, entitled "Navajo Dancer", was taken by Patrick James Michel during one of his many trips to the American West. "One of the themes that has always been with me and still is with me is tribes, because tribes are governed by codes, because they are over a very long time. One of the beauties of being a photographer who travels is that you can visit these tribes and share amazing moments with them" said Patrick James Michel in an interview conducted by Marie Audier d'Alessandris. This photograph is featured in his book "Five" which highlights the elements of earth, water, fire, air and cosmos. The photo shows a Navajo dancer, who uses dance to convey the traditional teachings of Navajo culture. The Navajo consider themselves "Dineh": "the People". According to legend, they emerged from the earth in the Southwestern United States:

In 2004, his book "Five" was published by STEIDL. This book is a work on the 5 elements (Earth, Air, Fire, Water and Cosmos) on the 5 continents. Each of the elements is represented by a series of photographs taken in different places around the world. For Earth, Patrick James Michel worked with the Samburu in northern Kenya, for Air with the Hopi, Zuni, Navajo of the southwestern United States, for Fire with the Tuareg in the Sahara Desert, for Water with the Sadhu along the Ganges River in India, and for Cosmos with the Aborigines of Arnhem Land in Australia. The book "FIVE" is a celebration of the diversity and richness of cultures around the world, and offers a unique perspective on how human beings interact with the natural elements around them. Patrick James Michel's photographs are beautiful and captivating, and offer a stunning look at these often overlooked cultures and places.

This photograph was taken in 1998 in Moab, Utah, during a trip by Patrick James Michel to meet with local ranchers. The photo shows horses kicking up dust and air, capturing the energy of life. "A paddock that they're pushing the horses into, and since it was in a somewhat sandy area, backlighting, end of the day, everything beautiful. You have just all the elements that participate" the photographer says. The composition plays with light and contrasts to create a sensation of movement:

This other photograph taken on the Dugout Ranch near Moab, features Heidi Redd and her son in a simple, relaxed setting, expressing their deep positive energy and love for the land. "This photo is kind of funny because the woman is the owner of a huge ranch and it's really funny because this woman is a multi-millionaire, and she's still dressed like a cowgirl (…) Yes you have cowboys living happily, yes you have people living like they did in the 19th century or even the 18th century, it's beautiful, it's good," comments Patrick James Michel. The photo conveys their commitment to the preservation of the land, which is reinforced by their work with the Conservancy to protect the Dugout Ranch from development:
