In Zee, Paul Bellaart returns to one of photography’s oldest obsessions: light dancing across the surface of the sea. Yet unlike the grand seascapes of classical painters or even the sweeping drama of 20th-century coastal photography, Bellaart’s approach is humble, elemental, and intimately devotional.
Shot in black and white, the photograph captures the moment where sea meets sky through a minimalist palette—but within that simplicity lies extraordinary emotional depth. The sun leaves a serpentine shimmer across the water, pulling the viewer’s gaze from shore to horizon in a soft crescendo of light. There are no human figures, no horizon line even—only movement, texture, and silence. This is Bellaart’s Eden: untouched, naive, and deeply romantic. His lens doesn’t seek to conquer nature but to hold it in reverence. The image suggests not a place, but a feeling—a memory halfremembered, the sensual trace of salt on skin, or the meditative rhythm of the tides.
As with all of Bellaart’s work, Zee is an invitation to return to what is essential, to experience wonder with the eyes of a child and the soul of a poet. It’s a photograph that doesn’t need to shout to be heard.
