It’s dark, but from the car window we can see a burst of light: a man has lit himself on fire. We can make out the words on the cardboard sign he holds: COVID 19. This is one of the rare images from Brian Bowen Smith’s Drivebys that can immediately be placed in a specific time, and is instantly relatable for those who lived through the pandemic.
