In SX70 #132, Robert Farber reduces an American car to pure abstraction. The close crop isolates a tail light, a stripe of red, a slash of blue bodywork, and a geometric corner of panel: the hallmarks of 1970s automotive design translated into a study of color, line, and surface. Nothing of the car's identity remains except its visual grammar.
This is Farber at his most painterly. The SX70 format, with its soft tonal range and characteristic instant print quality, turns the industrial surface into something almost sensual. The image sits squarely in a tradition that includes William Eggleston's color studies and the New Topographics movement's attention to the American-made object. Yet Farber brings a fashion photographer's instinct for graphic impact: the composition is tight, intentional, and immediate.
