SX70 #097
PHOTOGRAPHER: ROBERT FARBER
SX70 #097 belongs to one of the most quietly radical bodies of work in Robert Farber's five-decade practice. From the early 1970s through the early 1990s, Farber carried a Polaroid SX70 alongside his professional cameras, using it not as a test tool but as a primary artistic instrument. What emerged was a sustained meditation on the American city and its material surfaces.
In SX70 #097, Farber trains his lens on the curved stone base of a Beaux-Arts building at 100th Street and Riverside Drive, the handwritten annotation still visible on the original print. The composition turns architecture into pure geometry: the arc of the rusticated limestone, the recessed panel, the shadow line at pavement level. Farber applies the painter's eye that defines his fashion work to the built environment, finding in the weight and curve of the stone something both monumental and intimate. The Polaroid format adds its own layer of meaning: the crisp white border frames the image like a relic, an artifact of attention.
