Lake Turkana, the Cradle of Humanity
PHOTOGRAPHER: PATRICK JAMES MICHEL
“We arrived at Lake Turkana, the place where scientists discovered the oldest human bones: they called her Lucy, she is 6 millions years old. A place that smells like cracked dry earth and where flamingos gather. After we were introduced to the Turkana tribe by my friend Lokimanki, we were allowed to set up our camp. I started playing with a child who was playing on his raft made of two planks. More kids came and later we met their parents. We saw each other again for several days, we bought fish from their father, from different fishermen in the tribe. I took pictures that they collaborated on. One evening, it was getting late and we were on the way to our camp, the children and the mother gave me friendly signs from afar, I took the photo the next minute when the children listened to their mother who was talking to them.”
