JANE FORTH 02

PHOTOGRAPHER: CHRIS VON WANGENHEIM

A striking portrait of Jane Forth, Andy Warhol's legendary muse and boundary-pushing style icon, captured by renowned fashion photographer Chris von Wangenheim. Shot in luminous black and white, this image showcases Forth's revolutionary approach to beauty as she poses with graceful confidence: the stark contrast of elegant opera gloves against bare skin, her signature slick hairstyle, and the porcelain complexion that made her one of the most distinctive faces of the 1970s.

Known for treating her face as a blank canvas, Forth drew inspiration from 1920s and 30s cinema stars like Clara Bow and Bette Davis, pushing the pencil-thin eyebrow trend to its extreme by keeping only the beginning of her brows visible. For her, makeup was a catalyst for creativity and imagination. Her iconic look influenced generations of fashion imagery and even inspired character design in contemporary cinema like the transgender character played by Jared Leto in Dallas Buyer’s Club. Featured in Andy Warhol's 1970 film Trash — only a year after their encounter—Forth embodied the provocative glamour of downtown New York's art scene.

This photograph captures Von Wangenheim's masterful ability to document the era's most compelling faces, making it an essential piece for collectors of fashion photography and cultural history.

Part of a celebrated series of six photographs by Chris von Wangenheim featuring Warhol Superstars Donna Jordan and Jane Forth, exhibited in "Femme Touch" at The Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh, 2020.
