LIAIGRE X THE SELECTS GALLERY

Cordially invite you to

The Organicity of Time

A collection of works by Robert Farber

June 15 - September 14 2021

Including twelve pieces from acclaimed photographer, Robert Farber, and presented as a retrospective, the curation for this exhibition by THE SELECTS GALLERY’s Marie Audier D’Alessandris, centers itself on values of timelessness and elegance, with inspiration pulled from Nature; qualities that are essential to the LIAIGRE spirit.

LIAIGRE’s identity, forged over 35 years, is known for designs cultivated with precision and a focus on refined materials, tones, and colors, simplicity of lines, and a taste for nature. Nature remains one of the house’s main creative axes, as it continues to transform as seasons and time pass.

Robert Farber’s practice has always focused on the photography medium as art. His painterly style and his mastery of light have been at the service of the world’s beauty. His soft and gracious style has resulted in many exhibitions and commercial projects during his 50 years career. Serendipity, life events, and reinvention have done the rest. The intervention of Jaqueline Kennedy and a few disasters have shaped Farber’s impressive collection of images that have been collected around the world. Each photograph selected for the exhibition paired with LIAIGRE’s interior design conveys the concept of time in its most natural form.

RUNNING HORSES

The Running Horses photograph represents Robert Farber’s painterly and romantic signature style. Presented as a tryptic, the image was shot in Camargue, France in 1989 during a commissioned campaign. It was shot in a private ranch where the wranglers were running the wild horses behind the models. Aside from the images with the models, Robert opted to grab his other camera and shoot this image that is one of his best selling gallery prints. It has nearly sold out in a previously released size.

ICONIC NUDES SERIES

The Iconic Nudes series, for which Robert Farber is well known, offers a deep sense of elegance and timelessness. His book ”Farber’s Nudes” caught the eye of Jaqueline Kennedy Onassis; she brought Farber to Double Day and observed his photographs from the French Riviera which led to the creation of the book “By the Sea”.

“Farber’s Nudes” was also included in the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis estate collection. The two black and white prints are some of the artist’s most famous pictures and seem to erase the concept of Time.

POLAROIDS SERIES

The Polaroids series that includes three prints holds significant connotations to analog photography, the spontaneity of the medium, and the past. The quality of the images and the stories behind them are sacred to the artist.

DETERIORATION SERIES

The Deterioration Series was created organically over 30 years. It started unintentionally due to the film’s chemical reaction from sitting in non archival plastic sleeves and Farber allowed the process to continue. He did not manipulate it and monitored it for decades. Farber finally decided to end the deterioration process in 2013 when his abstract exploration of differently shaped stains and intricate color shifts created striking new imagery that pleased him.

WET SERIES

The Wet Series is one of his most recent series. Similar to the Deterioration Series it was created unintentionally when the artist's studio was flooded overnight, affecting many of his prints. He found the affected photos more interesting to him than the unaffected ones. He celebrated the lack of control over the process, its improvisation, spontaneity, and movement as a metaphor for human life and the wisdom we gain over time.
